This app has helped us with our learning in class. We can use it for things like brainstorming and planning and for putting together information.
Miss Phillips found pout about this app in a course that she learnt about all apps that help us with learning. There are two popplet apps and one of them (free) can't save and you only have one popplet and the one that costs can save as many as you want. We are doing a popplet about the Tangiwai disaster and here are some facts...

Simple Machines

Simple Machines

 

 

For science this term we have been learning about Simple Machines. We have learnt that they are all around us and help us to do things everyday. There are 6 types of simple machines-wheel and axle, levers, pulleys, inclined planes, wedges and screws.

 

We made catapults because these are an example of a lever. You have a load, effort and fulcrum. 3…2…1… Fire! We had a competition to see whose catapult could launch a ball of paper the longest distance...

 

 

 

Cars have wheels and axles and we made these as part of our homework. Here are some photos…

 

 

Using all our knowledge about Simple Machines we created Chain Reaction Contraptions. In these we used a number of different simple machines to create one complex machine.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Baking with Ana, Annabelle and Spirit-Leigh!

Today we made a yummy chocolate cake.





















Firstly we greased the baking dish and turned the oven onto 160 degrees.








Secondly we placed the egg and 1 1/4 cups of water and the mixture into a mixing bowl.











Next we mixed all the ingredients in the bowl.

  

 




We poured the mixture in to the cake tin, and put it in the oven.

We put the cake in the oven, set the timer for 55 minutes and waited...

 

We made chocolate icing and put sprinkles on it. Here is a picture of our cake all finished...

We have been learning how to write a piece of exposition with clear arguments, backed up with explanations and evidence.

 

 

The structure of an exposition is: Preview (State your point of view and briefly outline the three points of your argument), Elaborations (Adding detail to your arguments), Reiteration (Last chance to convince your audience and restate your point of view)

 

 

Here are some examples we have written:

Should all children in the senior school be allowed to bring an Ipad or an Ipod to school?

I think children at Korakonui School should be allowed to bring an Ipad or an Ipod to school. Firstly, we could use them to find recipes to make school lunches. Secondly, you could learn on them and finally, you could check the weather.

 

It would be good if we could use Google to find recipes. We could find healthy recipes and make lunches for people. If someone was sick we could make them some soup. We could sell the food to make money.

 

 We could learn maths on tablets. You could look up how much things cost and you could also do reading games so you get better at reading.

 

I believe that we need to check the weather so that we know what clothes to wear. Also, if we are going to play sport we can check the weather so that we know if it is going to rain.

 

 It is for these reasons that I think Korakonui kids should be able to bring an Ipad or Ipod to school to help them learn.

Should our school swimming pool be heated?

I believe that the school swimming pool should not be heated. Firstly, I think heating the swimming pool will cost too much money. Secondly, we would get used to swimming in water that is warm and wouldn’t be used to cold water. Finally, in summer the water would be too hot.

 

Heating the swimming pool would be really expensive for the school. The average cost to heat a swimming pool in $120 per month. This amount of money could be spent on other things like new sports gear. Too much money would be coming out of our school budget for the pool. It already costs lots of money to keep the pool working.

 

If the pool was heated we would get used to warm water. Your body gets used to certain temperatures. If you went for a swim in the sea you would probably freeze because you have been used to swimming in such warm water.

 

When we go swimming in the summer we want to cool down. If the pool was heated it would be too hot and we wouldn’t cool our bodies down. We wouldn’t want to swim if it was too hot. When we feel hot we feel less energised and wouldn’t want to do lengths.

 

I am certain that heating the school swimming pool is not a good idea. We are better off to leave it as it is. Some schools don’t even have a swimming pool at all so we are lucky!

Should commercial fishermen be banned?

 

Imagine being a little baby fish swimming silently through the sea and then bang! You get swooped up by a gigantic net. Not fair is it??

I firmly believe that commercial fishermen should be banned. In the first place, the commercial fishermen kill all the little fish. Consequently, they throw the little fish or any other fish they don't want back. It is known that the commercial fishermen catch endangered species such as dolphins in their nets and kill them.

 

Too many little baby fish are being unnecessarily murdered. The commercial fishermen kill all the baby fish in their nets and they don't even care. If all the little fish are killed there will be no fish for the future.

 

Large amounts of fish are being thrown back, already dead. The commercial fishermen catch large amounts of fish, and once they have their quota throw back the smaller fish into the sea and leave them for everyone else to clean up. Nobody is picking it up and the dead fish are rotting and polluting our oceans, killing more fish. Each year 20-40 tonnes of dead fish are thrown back into the sea.

 

Endangered species are being captured and killed. Dolphins and sea turtles swim into the nets and are caught and often die while waiting to get to the boat. Every year 150,000 or more endangered fish are being killed and that is mostly dolphins and sea turtles.

 

Therefore, I strongly agree with the statement that commercial fishermen should definitely be banned. It is extremely important to keep our oceans clean and healthy and to keep our fish for future generations.

Museum Trip 2013 Rm 6

MUSEUM   TRIP

THURSDAY THE 20^TH OF JUNE 2013 

Hi all,

  It’s been a while since we have blogged because we have been  non - stop  learning about Matariki which means "eyes of god" or "tiny eyes". Matariki is also the name of the Maori New Year where you see the constellation of 7 stars in the sky. Finally the day came and it was time to go to  the museum. Thank you to the parents that transported us to the museum.  We soon arrived and Alan Reiley ( The museum educator)  had a slideshow  to see what kind of Manu Tukutuku kites they made in the older days. He then showed us the materials we were going to use. All of us started  with blank  minds on how we were going to make the kites. Our materials we had were flax and some other materials. Then he showed us how to make them while we  were in groups of 3 our 4 . He showed us how to make the Manu Tukutuku kites step by  step. Soon we finished with the help of  parents the teachers and Alan Reiley.And man do they  look amazing.

Paige , Pip and Nikki were in a group.

It was a great day for cross country. All the children were amped for the big day. We would like to thank Sam, Catherine and Daniel White for building the track and letting us use your farm. Also a big thank you to the parents and caregivers for coming to watch the race, We all disserved a sausage and an ice block!!!
