Museum Trip 2013 Rm 6

MUSEUM   TRIP

THURSDAY THE 20TH OF JUNE 2013

Hi all,

It’s been a while since we have blogged because we have been  non - stop  learning about Matariki which means "eyes of god" or "tiny eyes". Matariki is also the name of the Maori New Year where you see the constellation of 7 stars in the sky. Finally the day came and it was time to go to  the museum. Thank you to the parents that transported us to the museum.  We soon arrived and Alan Reiley ( The museum educator)  had a slideshow  to see what kind of Manu Tukutuku kites they made in the older days. He then showed us the materials we were going to use. All of us started  with blank  minds on how we were going to make the kites. Our materials we had were flax and some other materials. Then he showed us how to make them while we  were in groups of 3 our 4 . He showed us how to make the Manu Tukutuku kites step by  step. Soon we finished with the help of  parents the teachers and Alan Reiley. And man do they  look amazing.

Caitlyn , Annabelle , Boston and Paul were in a  grop

Paige , Pip and Nikki were in a group.

Room 6 Science Day 2013

Room 6 Science Day

EXPERIMENTS IN ROOM 6
  • DANCING SULTANAS
  • DISSOLVING SOLIDS
  • OOBLECK
  • LAVA LAMP
  • MENTOS GEYSER
  • REACTIONS - INFLATING A BALLOON
  • SECRET MESSAGES

Room 6 splited up into two even groups with Miss Phillips and Mrs Robinson.
 Frist of all we tried

 DANCING SULTANAS.

These are the steps
  1. We poured the soda water into the bowl
  1. Next we added the sultanas one at a time gently into the soda water.2.
  2. We poured three quarters of the soda water into the bowl, and then each of us gently dropped a sultana into the water.
  3. We then predicted what would happen.

What Happened:  When we dropped a sultana in the water slowly they started to float up and down. We tried a sultana in ordinary water but it didn’t have the same reaction.

Next we tried Oobleck.
Oobleck
Oobleck is a non-newtonian fluid, that means it acts like a liquid when being poured, but like a solid when a force is acting on it. If you can make enough Oobleck you can even walk on it.
Recipe:
Water, Corn Starch and a drop of food colouring. (Optional)
  1. We poured some corn starch into a bowl and added  the water to the mixture
  2. We then started mixing the two together.
  3. We mixed until hard stuff (Oobleck) was at the bottom.
4          We grabbed the mixture out of the bowl and started to play. By the time we were finished the       court was covered in Oobleck.
When we touched the Oobleck it was hard and when we tipped it from hand to hand it turned to a  liquid.
We had a lot of fun and excitemen. It  was a great day playing and learning with science.

THE KAYAKING WAS VERY CHALLENGING!  we had TO RAFT UP AND WE HAD TO GET INTO EACH other's KAYAKs- THAT  DID NOT GO SO WELL.

ANY WAY  THEY SAY ONE OF THE ADULTS [CRAIG  Mc CULLOUGH ] COULD NOT GET THE HANG OF SAILING AND TIPPED THE YELLOW  SAIL BOAT , AND SPENT MOST OF THE TIME SCOOPING OUT WATER OF THE SAIL BOAT  WHILE THE OTHER PARENTS GOT THE HANG OF IT, UNTIL THE END WERE THE PARENTS HAD TO BE TOWED IN.

WHILE this was happening down at the beach, THE OTHER  HALF ENJOYED A WALK UP A STREAM TO A BEAUTIFUL WATER HOLE. MOST OF THEM SAY THEY JUMPED OFF A ROCK INTO A DEEP  WATER HOLE BUT THE  RULES WERE TO JUMP AS FAR AS YOU CAN OTHER WISE YOU Would HAVE BIG SWoLLEN PURPLE BRUISE.
